No fewer than nine soldiers and a police officer are feared dead following a deadly ambush by suspected armed gunmen in Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State.Governor Nasir Idris confirmed the attack, which occurred on Tuesday night in the Giro Masa community.

Eyewitnesses said the incident began after security operatives were deployed to the area following a distress call from residents, but were ambushed by the attackers en route to the location.

The assault reportedly left several security personnel dead, alongside at least two civilians, while two military trucks were set ablaze during the attack. Residents described the scene as chaotic and terrifying, with the community thrown into shock.

Condemning the incident, Governor Idris described the attack as barbaric during a visit to victims at the Federal Teaching Hospital in Birnin Kebbi.

“This is a sad incident. These are the soldiers who protect the lives of Kebbi residents, yet they found themselves in this situation. The Kebbi State Government will not relent in its efforts to protect the lives of its citizens,” he said.

The governor assured that the state government would cover the medical expenses of the injured and provide support to families of the deceased security personnel.

He also visited the scene of the attack for an on-the-spot assessment and reiterated his administration’s commitment to strengthening security across the state.

As of the time of filing this report, military authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident.

The attack adds to a growing wave of violence across northern Nigeria, where banditry and insurgency have continued to target both civilians and security forces.
