BREAKING: INEC revises 2027 election calendar, fixes Jan 16 for presidential poll
The Independent National Electoral Commission has announced January 16, 2027, as the new date for Nigeria’s presidential and National Assembly elections.
The commission also fixed February 6, 2027, for the governorship and State Houses of Assembly elections across the country.
The new timetable was disclosed on Thursday by Mohammed Haruna, National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee, in a statement issued by the electoral body.
INEC explained that the revision became necessary following the repeal of the Electoral Act 2022 and the enactment of the Electoral Act 2026, which required adjustments to the election calendar.
The commission had earlier scheduled the presidential and National Assembly elections for February 20, 2027, while governorship and state assembly polls were fixed for March 6, 2027, before the latest review.
Further details are expected.
