Hold secret meetings and face sack – Fubara warns new SSG, Chief of Staff

Rivers State Governor has charged the newly appointed Secretary to the State Government and Chief of Staff to discharge their duties with discipline, loyalty and unwavering commitment to the success of his administration.

The governor stressed that the welfare of Rivers people must remain the top priority of government, warning that involvement in unauthorised nocturnal meetings or any conduct capable of embarrassing the administration would attract immediate dismissal.

Fubara gave the warning on Thursday shortly after the swearing-in of the new Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Dagogo Wokoma, and the new Chief of Staff, Barrister Sunny Ewule, at Government House, Port Harcourt.

The oath of office was administered by the Chief Registrar of the State High Court, David Ihua-Maduenyi, who led the appointees in taking the Oath of Allegiance and Oath of Office before the governor delivered his charge.

He reminded the appointees that their elevation to office was a call to service and not an opportunity for political showmanship or personal ambition, urging them to demonstrate integrity, restraint and dedication to the public good.

Addressing the new SSG, Fubara described Wokoma as an accomplished academic and mathematician and expressed confidence in his capacity to deliver on the assignment.

“The office of the Secretary to the State Government demands thoroughness, discipline and a deep sense of responsibility,” the governor said.

“Your duty includes representing the state government. You need to represent us in a manner that brings honour to the state. What is important to this administration is to ensure that the good works we started, and those we inherited, are concluded in a way that brings progress and development to our dear state.”

Speaking on the responsibilities of the Chief of Staff, Fubara said the office requires effective coordination of administrative activities, proper management of official engagements and protection of the image of Government House.

He emphasised that the role operates strictly under the authority of the governor and warned against activities capable of undermining the administration.

“Let me make it very clear: your duty is to handle administrative duties and image-making roles efficiently, liaising with anyone coming for any official assignment. If you involve yourself in nocturnal meetings or similar activities, I will sack you. I am very serious. What matters to me is the peace, progress and prosperity of this state. I will not compromise on that,” he said.

The governor cautioned that any action capable of bringing the government or his office into disrepute would attract appropriate sanctions.

While congratulating the new appointees, Fubara expressed optimism that they would justify the confidence reposed in them and urged public officials to work together in unity for the collective good of the state.

He also directed permanent secretaries who have reached retirement age to begin preparing their handover notes, stressing that the directive was meant to ensure a smooth transition.

Fubara warned against financial misconduct or last-minute irregularities, stating that his administration was closely monitoring the system to ensure strict accountability.
