BREAKING: National grid collapses again – Second time in Five Days
Load allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies dropped to zero megawatts by 11 a.m.
Nigeria’s national electricity grid collapsed on Tuesday morning, plunging several parts of the country into darkness.
Data obtained from the Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) showed that power allocation to all 11 electricity distribution companies (DisCos) dropped to zero megawatts (MW) at about 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday.
According to figures released by the system operator, power generation also crashed to 39MW, far below the level required to sustain supply nationwide.
The latest incident marks the second national grid collapse in less than one week.
On January 23, the grid collapsed for the first time in 2026, disrupting electricity supply across the country.
Explaining the earlier collapse, NISO said it was caused by a system-wide disturbance triggered by the tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, alongside the disconnection of some generating units.
“Preliminary operational reports indicate that the disturbance was associated with the simultaneous tripping of multiple 330kV transmission lines, alongside the disconnection of some grid-connected generating units,” the operator said.
“These events collectively contributed to the system collapse at the time indicated.”
Nigeria’s power sector has continued to battle instability, with the national grid experiencing multiple collapses in 2025, the last of which was recorded on December 29.
