BREAKING: Panic as explosion hits gas station in Abuja
The force of the blast reportedly uprooted signposts and overturned a traffic warden’s booth around Liberty Junction, while residents were thrown into panic following the incident.
Panic broke out among residents of Kubwa, Abuja, early Sunday morning after an explosion occurred at a gas refilling outlet near Liberty Junction.
The incident happened after a fire reportedly started at the facility, causing a blast that shook nearby buildings and raised fears of a larger gas explosion.
The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command, said its firefighters, alongside other emergency responders, arrived at the scene at about 6:30am and successfully brought the fire under control.
The agency said the quick response helped prevent what could have been a major gas explosion in the area.

Eyewitnesses who covered the incident on Facebook alleged that the fire started after a motorist driving against traffic crashed into the gas outlet where gas cylinders were kept. The claim has not been independently verified.
“The Federal Fire Service, FCT Command firefighters and other emergency responders today, Sunday 27th September 2026, at about 6:30am swiftly responded to a gas fire at Liberty Junction, Kubwa, Abuja, averting what would have been a major destructive gas explosion,” the Fire Service said.
Additional fire service water tankers and operatives of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) were also reported to have joined the emergency response.
Residents of nearby areas, including Dantata Estate, said the explosion was loud enough to wake people from sleep, with some reporting that their buildings shook during the incident.
The cause of the fire and whether the alleged vehicle collision triggered the incident remained subject to further investigation.
There was no immediate official confirmation of deaths or injuries as of the time of filing the report.
