BREAKING: Saudi Arabia fixes Friday for Eid as Nigeria awaits Sultan’s announcement

Published

on

Saudi Arabian authorities have declared Friday, March 20, 2026, as the day for the celebration of Eid al-Fitr after confirming that the crescent moon signalling the start of Shawwal was not sighted.

The announcement followed a nationwide moon sighting exercise, widely monitored across media platforms, which established that Ramadan will complete its full 30 days.

According to the update, the absence of the crescent means Muslims in the Kingdom will observe Eid al-Fitr on Friday, marking the end of the fasting period.

Meanwhile, Muslims in Nigeria are awaiting an official pronouncement from the Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar, who traditionally determines the end of Ramadan based on verified local moon sightings.

Earlier, the Sultan had called on Muslims across the country to observe the new moon on the 29th day of Ramadan and report any credible sighting through designated channels for confirmation by the Sultanate Council.

In Nigeria, the Sultan’s declaration remains the final authority on the commencement of Eid celebrations, and the date can sometimes differ from that observed in Saudi Arabia due to variations in moon sighting.

The appearance of the Shawwal crescent marks the conclusion of the Ramadan fast and ushers in Eid al-Fitr, one of the most significant festivals in the Islamic calendar.
