BREAKING: Sen. Abaribe dumps APGA, joins ADC

Senator Eyinnaya Abaribe has officially resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) and declared his membership of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), further strengthening the emerging opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Abaribe announced his defection on Wednesday during a political gathering in Enugu, the Enugu State capital, where former Labour Party presidential candidate, Mr Peter Obi, alongside other South-East political leaders, formally declared for the ADC.

Addressing the crowd, the Abia South senator publicly confirmed his exit from APGA and pledged allegiance to his new political platform.

“Mr David Mark, Chairman of ADC, this is the logo of the party on this cap, and I am going to wear this cap for the first time,” Abaribe said amid cheers from supporters.

“Let me also announce that this morning, I resigned from the All Progressives Grand Alliance. So as at now, I am fully in ADC, following my brother and our leader, Mr Peter Obi.”

Abaribe’s defection comes hours after Obi and several political leaders from Nigeria’s South-East geopolitical zone announced their decision to join the ADC, citing the need to work with other opposition forces across the country to rescue Nigeria from what they described as poor governance under the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The leaders made the declaration after months of consultations, stressing that the move was part of a broader strategy to build a united opposition capable of challenging the APC in future elections.

Speaking at the event, Obi said Nigeria stood at a critical turning point, urging Nigerians to take decisive action to reverse the country’s socio-economic decline.

“As the year 2025 ends today, we stand on the threshold of a new year, which we hope will mark the beginning of Nigeria’s long-awaited socio-economic transformation,” Obi said.

“For Nigeria, that moment of decisive action is now. Nigeria is not poor; we are looted into poverty.”

Obi further described the country as being in grave distress, citing worsening insecurity, unemployment, poverty and institutional decay as major challenges confronting the nation.

Abaribe, a seasoned lawmaker and influential political figure in the South-East, has long been a prominent voice in national legislative debates. His defection is seen by analysts as a significant boost to the ADC’s growing profile and a sign of intensifying political realignments as the 2027 election cycle approaches.
