BREAKING: Super Eagles star Troost-Ekong trapped in Doha amid Middle East tensions

Former Super Eagles captain William Troost-Ekong is among several international footballers reportedly stranded in Qatar following escalating military tensions across the Gulf region.

Troost-Ekong, who recently joined Al Ahli SC in the Qatar Stars League, is unable to leave the country after authorities shut down airspace over large parts of the region due to security concerns.

The airspace closure followed rising hostilities between Iran and the United States, with reports of missile exchanges across the Middle East. Regional outlets indicated that Iran launched strikes targeting strategic sites, describing the action as retaliation for coordinated operations involving the US and Israel.

Qatar’s Ministry of Defence later confirmed that its air defence systems intercepted incoming missiles under a pre-approved security response plan. As a precaution, Qatar and several neighbouring countries temporarily suspended flights, disrupting travel plans for expatriates, tourists and professional athletes.

The decision has effectively left numerous foreign nationals grounded, including players competing in the domestic league.

For Troost-Ekong, the development comes just as he begins a new chapter in his career following his January switch from Saudi Arabia.

The defender had been settling into life in Doha before the sudden escalation of tensions halted movement in and out of the country.

While there have been no reports of injuries or direct threats to civilians in Qatar, the unfolding crisis has underscored the far-reaching impact of geopolitical tensions on global sport and international travel.
