Burkina Faso appoint Amir Abdou as new Coach following AFCON setback
The Burkina Faso Football Federation has announced the appointment of Amir Abdou as the new head coach of the Stallions, describing the move as the beginning of a new era built on structure, ambition and stronger competitiveness.
The federation said the decision to hire the 53-year-old Franco-Comorian tactician followed what it called a “rigorous examination” process, stressing that several candidates were assessed before a final choice was made.
Abdou takes over from Brama Traore, whose time in charge came to an end after Burkina Faso’s disappointing early exit from the Africa Cup of Nations in Morocco.
The poor outing at the tournament led to serious reflection within the football body about the team’s direction and future.
Our correspondent on Monday retrieved this from the CAF website in a release dated Sunday, March 1, 2026.
“Following a call for applications and a rigorous examination of the different profiles, Comorian coach Abdou Amir has been officially selected to take the reins of Burkina Faso’s A team,” the federation announced.
Abdou’s arrival is viewed as a calculated reset for a national side long respected across the continent yet striving for sustained impact at major tournaments.
His immediate priorities are clear: stabilising performances ahead of the 2027 TotalEnergies CAF Africa Cup of Nations qualifying campaign and navigating upcoming World Cup qualifiers where consistency will be critical.
Abdou’s records
The new Stallions coach brings with him a record forged in continental competition.
He first gained widespread recognition with the Comoros national football team, guiding the island nation to the knockout stages of the Africa Cup of Nations for the first time in their history in 2021 — an achievement that reshaped perceptions of Comorian football.
He later continued that trajectory with the Mauritania national football team, overseeing a landmark victory over Algeria at AFCON 2023 and reinforcing his credentials as a tactically disciplined organiser capable of extracting maximum output from his squads.
At club level, Abdou secured two Mauritanian league titles with FC Nouadhibou before most recently working in Morocco’s top division with Hassania Agadir.
Widely regarded for building compact defensive units and fostering collective cohesion, Abdou now assumes responsibility for a Burkina Faso side blending established internationals with emerging prospects.
His approach, rooted in organisation, unity and tactical clarity, is expected to form the backbone of the federation’s rebuilding strategy.
Burkina Faso’s continental credentials remain significant.
The Stallions reached the AFCON final in 2013 and advanced to the semi-finals in 2017 and 2021.
Yet recent inconsistency, culminating in their premature exit at the last edition, has intensified the demand for stability and sustained competitiveness.
Abdou’s first fixtures are scheduled for the March 2026 international window, though opponents are yet to be confirmed. With World Cup qualifiers looming and preparations for future continental tournaments already underway, the timeline for impact is immediate.
For the federation, the appointment represents a bet on experience and proven continental leadership.
For Abdou, it is the opportunity to guide a nation with established pedigree toward renewed contention for honours.
