President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has forwarded a fresh list of 32 ambassadorial nominees to the Senate for screening and confirmation, days after transmitting the first batch of three nominees.

The latest list includes notable political figures such as former chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu; former presidential aide, Reno Omokri (Delta); and former Enugu State Governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

In two separate letters addressed to Senate President Godswill Akpabio, President Tinubu urged the upper chamber to expedite the confirmation of 15 career ambassadors and 17 non-career ambassadors, according to a statement signed on Saturday by the Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.

Onanuga disclosed that the list contains four women among the career ambassadors and six among the non-career nominees.

Among the non-career nominees are Ogbonnaya Kalu (Abia), Reno Omokri (Delta), Prof. Mahmud Yakubu, former Ekiti First Lady Erelu Bisi Fayemi Adebayo, and former Enugu governor, Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi.

Others include former Katsina House of Assembly Speaker, Tasiu Musa Maigari; former Plateau Commissioner, Yakubu N. Gambo; and former Deputy Executive Secretary of the Universal Basic Education Commission (UBEC).

Also listed are former Plateau senator, Prof. Nora Ladi Daduut; former Lagos Deputy Governor, Otunba Femi Pedro; former Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode; and Nkechi Ufochukwu (Anambra). Former Oyo First Lady, Florence Ajimobi; former Lagos Commissioner, Lola Akande; former Adamawa senator, Grace Bent; ex-Abia governor, Okezie Ikpeazu; Ondo senator and businessman, Jimoh Ibrahim; and former Vatican envoy, Ambassador Paul Oga Adikwu, were also named.

The 15 career diplomats nominated include: Enebechi Monica Okwuchukwu (Abia), Yakubu Nyaku Danladi (Taraba), Miamuna Ibrahim Besto (Adamawa), Musa Musa Abubakar (Kebbi), Syndoph Paebi Endoni (Bayelsa), Chima Geoffrey Lioma David (Ebonyi), Mopelola Adeola-Ibrahim (Ogun), Abimbola Samuel Reuben (Ondo), Yvonne Ehinosen Odumah (Edo), Hamza Mohammed Salau (Niger), Ambassador Shehu Barde (Katsina), Ambassador Ahmed Mohammed Monguno (Borno), Ambassador Muhammad Saidu Dahiru (Kaduna), Ambassador Olatunji Ahmed Sulu Gambari (Kwara) and Ambassador Wahab Adekola Akande (Osun).

According to the Presidency, the nominees will be deployed to strategic diplomatic posts including China, India, South Korea, Canada, Mexico, the UAE, Qatar, South Africa, Kenya, and key multilateral missions such as the United Nations, UNESCO and the African Union.

Their eventual postings will be finalized after Senate confirmation.

The development comes a week after Tinubu submitted another set of three nominees, Ambassador Ayodele Oke (Oyo), Ambassador Amin Mohammed Dalhatu (Jigawa), and retired Colonel Lateef Kayode Are (Ogun), who are being considered for ambassadorial appointments to the UK, USA or France.

Onanuga noted that more ambassadorial nominations will be released in the coming days, affirming earlier reports that the process will be staggered based on Nigeria’s foreign policy priorities.
