BREAKING: Resident Doctors suspend 29-Day strike, pens MoU with FG
The Nigerian Association of Resident Doctors (NARD) has suspended its indefinite strike after 29 days of crippling industrial action that grounded medical services across the country.
The strike, which began on November 1, 2025, was called off on Saturday following an Extraordinary National Executive Council meeting.
Confirming the development in a telephone interview, NARD’s Secretary-General, Dr Shuaibu Ibrahim, said the association reached the decision after signing a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Federal Government based on seven key demands.
The industrial action had paralysed activities in teaching hospitals nationwide, with about 11,000 resident doctors in 91 federal and state tertiary hospitals withdrawing their services over poor working conditions, unpaid allowances and unresolved welfare issues.
Dr Ibrahim explained that the MoU captured the association’s core demands, including:
Reinstatement of the sacked Lokoja resident doctors
Release of the Professional Allowance Table
Payment of promotion arrears
Settlement of salary arrears in identified hospitals
Implementation of the upgrade for doctors who passed Part I exams and met entry-level requirements
Implementation of the specialist allowance
Resolution of issues surrounding the Membership Certificate
According to him, two of the seven conditions have already been fulfilled.
“The Professional Allowance Table has been released, and a directive has been issued to the Head of Service that the entry level for doctors should now be CONMESS 3. So, the strike has been suspended immediately,” he said.
He added that the Federal Government has four weeks to address the remaining five demands as captured in the MoU.
However, the association warned that the suspension was conditional and not the end of the dispute.
“If the remaining demands are not met before the agreed timeline, we will resume the strike,” Dr Ibrahim cautioned.
More details are expected in the coming hours.
