Chaos as Police teargas pensioners during protest at Lagos House
Pensioners under the Nigeria Union of Pensioners (NUP) and the Contributory Pension Scheme have protested at the Lagos House in Ikeja over unpaid pension benefits.
The retirees demanded the implementation of approved pension increases and wage awards by the Lagos State Government.
They also called for the payment of outstanding pension arrears and other benefits they said had remained unpaid.
The protesters gathered at the government premises to draw attention to the challenges affecting their welfare and appeal to the state government to urgently address their demands.
The demonstration, however, was disrupted when police officers reportedly fired tear gas at the pensioners, forcing some of them to disperse.
The development heightened tension at the scene as the retirees expressed dissatisfaction over the use of force against them while demanding the payment of their entitlements.
The pensioners maintained that their demands were centred on the implementation of pension-related increases, payment of outstanding arrears and other benefits due to them.
Very Nigerian recalls that pensioners had issued an August 31 deadline for the payment of their outstanding pension enhancement and wage award.
