Consider me as Atiku’s running mate’ — Dele Momodu lobbies ADC

Veteran journalist and former presidential aspirant, Dele Momodu, has called on the African Democratic Congress (ADC) to consider him as running mate to its presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Momodu made the appeal in a post on his social media page on Monday, where he argued that a North–South ticket combining Atiku and himself would present what he described as a “formidable political alternative” capable of challenging the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

In his post, Momodu also shared an infographic promoting the proposed alliance, which he titled “The Attraction of Atiku Abubakar/Dele Momodu Ticket,” listing his perceived strengths, including media influence, youth appeal, and national acceptability.

He urged the ADC leadership to reconsider its traditional approach to zoning and candidate selection, insisting that political strategy rather than sentiment should guide its decisions.

Momodu, who previously contested for president in 2011 under the National Conscience Party (NCP) and later declared interest in the 2023 race on the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) platform before withdrawing, said the ADC must position itself as a bridge between experience and modern political thinking.

He argued that the 2027 election is likely to be a contest primarily between President Bola Tinubu and Atiku Abubakar, while noting that a third-force candidacy may emerge but would struggle to dislodge the two dominant figures.

According to him, the ADC must avoid internal divisions and adopt what he described as “idea-driven politics” rather than personality clashes.

Political observers say the proposal adds a new twist to ongoing manoeuvring within opposition circles, as parties continue negotiations and alignments ahead of what is expected to be a highly competitive 2027 election cycle.
