Court sentences Church Usher to death for killing girlfriend in Akwa Ibom
The Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo has sentenced a 33-year-old man, Ndifreke Isaiah Nelson, to death for the murder of his girlfriend, Emem Monday Effanga.
Nelson, an usher in a new generation church in Uyo, was convicted for killing the deceased on February 6, 2025, before fleeing with her mobile phone.
The court heard that on the day of the incident, Nelson visited his girlfriend at her residence along Aka Road, Uyo, under the pretext of using her phone to post birthday pictures on social media.
However, an argument reportedly broke out over the phone, during which he allegedly slammed her head against a wall and strangled her to death.
After the killing, he fled with her phone, but was later tracked down and arrested on February 8, 2025, at his church on Nsikak Eduok Avenue during an all-night service.
He was said to have confessed to the crime during interrogation.
Delivering judgment, Justice Ekpo Ntekim found him guilty on a two-count charge of murder and stealing and sentenced him to death by hanging or lethal injection.
The court held that the punishment for stealing was subsumed under the sentence for murder.
