Ekiti 2026: Wole Oluyede emerges PDP flag bearer
Renowned physician and businessman, Dr. Wole Oluyede, has emerged as the governorship candidate of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) for the 2026 election in Ekiti State.
Oluyede clinched the ticket after securing 279 votes, defeating his closest rival, Funsho Ayeni, who polled 239 votes, while the only female aspirant, Funmi Oguns, garnered 17 votes.
The tightly contested primary took place on Saturday at the Vino Event Centre, Elemi, along Afao Road in Ado-Ekiti, the state capital. The exercise, which was monitored by officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and security operatives, was described as peaceful and transparent.
Accreditation of delegates commenced around 6 p.m., with voting continuing late into the night and ending in the early hours of Sunday. Delegates from all 16 local government areas of the state participated, with observers commending the process as orderly and credible despite its long duration.
Dr. Oluyede, an Australia-based medical doctor, has built an impressive career across several continents, including the United States, Canada, the Caribbean, and Australia, earning wide professional and international recognition.
In his acceptance speech, Oluyede thanked party leaders, supporters, and delegates, dedicating his victory to all members of the PDP. He emphasized that the outcome of the primary showed that “internal democracy is alive and thriving” within the party.
“I thank every member of our great party who believed in the process and in the vision we share for a greater Ekiti,” Oluyede said. “There are no losers here—only partners in progress working towards a common goal.”
He commended the conduct of the primary, describing it as competitive, transparent, and fair, and lauded the maturity displayed by his fellow aspirants.
The PDP flag bearer also appreciated the support of the factional National Chairman, Ambassador Ilya Damagum, and the Southwest PDP leaders, especially Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State, for ensuring a level playing field for all participants.
Dr. Oluyede concluded by assuring Ekiti residents of a new beginning under his leadership, promising that his candidacy would usher in genuine progress and people-centered governance.
“With this victory, I assure Ekiti people that true change is coming,” he said. “The journey has just begun, and together, we will build a state that reflects the hopes and aspirations of our people.”
