El-Rufai alleges fresh plot to frame him, vows action

Former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai, has alleged a fresh plot to implicate him in criminal activities, claiming there is a coordinated effort to damage his reputation and keep him in prolonged detention.

In a statement issued on Sunday by his Media Adviser, Muyiwa Adekeye, the former governor warned of what he described as malicious attempts against him, citing recent developments as evidence of a troubling pattern.

El-Rufai recalled an incident on February 12, 2026, when he said he was targeted for arrest on arrival at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport from Cairo.

He also stated that he later honoured an invitation by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on February 16, after which he was detained and subsequently transferred to the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission on February 18.

According to the statement, the latest concern followed a report published by The Nation titled El-Rufai’s trial: Gunmen invade principal witness home, in which a witness, Mohammed Umar Karage, alleged that armed men invaded his residence.

El-Rufai’s camp said while citizens have a duty to report crimes, the report went further by publishing insinuations that sought to link the incident to the former governor.

The statement argued that the publication was designed to tarnish his image, weaken his pending bail application and associate him with offences he knows nothing about.

Maintaining his innocence, El-Rufai described himself as a law-abiding citizen with no connection to the alleged attack and disclosed that his lawyers have been directed to begin defamation proceedings against the newspaper.

He further alleged that since 2023, he has been subjected to a sustained campaign of vilification and warned against the misuse of legal processes, insisting that the rule of law must not become an instrument of oppression.
