Everton defeats Man United despite Gueye’s red card for slapping teammate

Everton survived an unbelievable moment of chaos at Old Trafford on Monday after Idrissa Gueye was sent off for slapping his teammate Michael Keane, yet still managed to beat Manchester United 1-0.

The Senegal midfielder was shown a straight red card by referee Tony Harrington in the 13th minute after putting his hand on Keane’s face during a heated argument.

The home crowd expected United to launch waves of attack, but the team failed to make use of the advantage. Despite dominating possession, they offered little threat against David Moyes’ determined Everton side.

Instead, Everton, reduced to 10 men, took the lead through a brilliant strike from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall in the 29th minute.

Dewsbury-Hall picked up the ball and drove forward, beating Bruno Fernandes and Leny Yoro before curling the ball into the top corner.

United tried to respond, but Everton goalkeeper Jordan Pickford pushed away a Fernandes long-range effort as half-time approached.

Ruben Amorim, marking one year in charge of United, brought on Mason Mount for Noussair Mazraoui at the break, but his side still struggled to create chances despite controlling the ball.

Amorim later introduced Kobbie Mainoo and Diogo Dalot for Casemiro and Yoro in the 58th minute, yet United continued to look short of ideas.

Pickford produced another key save, stopping a strong Joshua Zirkzee header with just over 10 minutes left, and Everton held on for a famous victory.

United had arrived at Old Trafford on a five-match unbeaten run.

Everton were already unlucky after losing captain Seamus Coleman in the 10th minute, but things got worse three minutes later with the shocking clash between Gueye and Keane.

Gueye has now become the first Premier League player to be sent off for fighting with a teammate since 2008.

According to the Premier League Match Centre, posted on X: “The referee’s call of red card to Gueye for violent conduct was checked and confirmed by VAR, with the action deemed to be a clear strike to the face of Keane.”
