A former Assistant Director of the Department of State Services (DSS), Dennis Amachree, has offered a fresh account of the final moments of former Head of State, General Sani Abacha, claiming the late military ruler died during an intimate encounter at the Presidential Villa in Abuja.

Amachree made the revelation in his newly released book, DSS @40: My Journey Behind the Shield, where he recounted events surrounding Abacha’s death on June 8, 1998.

According to the retired DSS officer, who was serving as Assistant Director of Operations and Intelligence at the Lagos DSS Command at the time, Abacha died at about 4:05 a.m. after suffering what he described as a coitus-induced cardiac arrest.

He alleged that Abacha’s girlfriend had arrived at the Presidential Villa with her younger sister, a pharmacist who was in Abuja for a conference. While the girlfriend later returned to her hotel, the younger sister reportedly remained behind with the Head of State.

Amachree claimed the woman later discovered Abacha had become unresponsive during the encounter and, after failing to revive him, quietly left the villa and returned to her hotel before catching an early morning flight to Lagos.

According to him, by the time security operatives attempted to locate her in Abuja, she had already departed for Lagos.

The former DSS officer said he personally interrogated the woman after she was traced to Lagos.

He claimed her first words during questioning were: “I did not kill him, he died on top of me.”

Amachree said her account contradicted several long-standing conspiracy theories surrounding Abacha’s death, including claims involving poisoned apples and foreign women.

He maintained that the former military ruler died of a heart attack during the intimate encounter.

General Sani Abacha ruled Nigeria from November 1993 until his death in June 1998. His sudden passing has remained one of the country’s most controversial political events, with numerous conflicting accounts emerging over the years.

Amachree’s claims are his personal account contained in his book and add to the many narratives that have surrounded the circumstances of Abacha’s death. They have not been independently verified.
