France’s Marine Le Pen faces 15-month ban from public office

A French appeals court on Tuesday sentenced far-right leader Marine Le Pen to one year of house arrest with an electronic ankle monitor over a fake jobs scandal linked to the European Parliament.

The court also barred her from contesting public office for 15 months. Although that ban is expected to expire later this year, the ruling has cast fresh doubt over whether she will contest France’s presidential election scheduled for next April.

Le Pen had earlier said she would not seek to succeed centrist President Emmanuel Macron if she remained under house arrest, arguing that such restrictions would prevent her from campaigning effectively.
