Fresh Benue attack forces residents to flee as gunmen invade community
Residents of Ondo community in Ugboju, Otukpo Local Government Area of Benue State, fled their homes on Tuesday morning after suspected armed herdsmen launched a fresh attack on the area.
The assailants reportedly stormed the community in the early hours of the day, opening fire indiscriminately and forcing residents to escape for safety.
A native of the community and Labour Party House of Assembly candidate for the 2027 elections, Hon. Jimmy Nart, confirmed the development, saying the attack was still ongoing at the time he raised the alarm.
In a message, he wrote: “I just received information from my family that Fulani terrorists are currently attacking Ondo, Ugboju. Protect yourself.”
The latest assault comes less than 48 hours after suspected armed herders attacked Otukpo-Nobi community in the same local government area, where more than 18 people were reportedly killed.
As of the time of filing this report, the number of casualties from the latest attack had yet to be independently verified.
Efforts to obtain an official reaction from the Benue State Police Command were unsuccessful, as the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Udeme Edet, neither answered calls nor responded to a text message seeking confirmation.
Meanwhile, residents said panic had gripped the community, with many families fleeing their homes over fears of further attacks.
