Troops arrest suspected ISIS member in Borno

Nigerian troops have arrested a suspected foreign Islamic State (ISIS) operative believed to be an Arab of Moroccan origin during a counter-terrorism operation in Cross Kauwa, Kukawa Local Government Area of Borno State.

According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, the suspect was apprehended after troops successfully repelled a coordinated terrorist attack on Cross Kauwa, forcing the insurgents to abandon equipment and flee.

Following the failed assault, troops launched exploitation and pursuit operations along the terrorists’ escape routes, leading to the recovery of additional operational materials believed to have been abandoned during the retreat.

Recovered items reportedly included high-frequency handheld radios and other communication equipment considered critical to the command-and-control structure of the terrorist group.

The publication said intelligence obtained from the recovered materials enabled security forces to extend operations deep into the Lake Chad Islands axis and towards Abadam Local Government Area.

The operation eventually led to the arrest of the fleeing foreign suspect, who is believed to have links with the Islamic State (ISIS).

According to military sources, the suspect had previously come under intelligence scrutiny following a joint forensic analysis conducted with international partners on video footage recovered from a camcorder seized after the Cross Kauwa encounter.

The camcorder was reportedly recovered from a terrorist cameraman who was killed during the failed attack.

Security sources explained that terrorist organisations often deploy media operatives alongside assault teams to record attacks for propaganda, recruitment and operational assessment purposes.

Investigators reportedly used footage recovered from the device to identify the foreign suspect.

The suspect has since been airlifted by the Nigerian Air Force to a secure military facility, where he is undergoing interrogation and intelligence exploitation.

Military authorities are expected to investigate his role within the terrorist organisation, his entry route into Nigeria, his links to the Islamic State’s transnational network, and any involvement in terrorist training, operational planning or media production for the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP).

The arrest is being regarded as a major intelligence breakthrough that could provide fresh insights into the structure, financing and international connections of terrorist groups operating across the Lake Chad Basin.

According to the report, the development further supports long-standing intelligence assessments that foreign nationals continue to provide technical support to extremist groups in the region, particularly in areas such as communications, explosives handling, training, media production and strategic coordination.

Although ISWAP is largely made up of local fighters recruited from communities around the Lake Chad Basin, intelligence over the years has reportedly indicated the presence of foreign facilitators from countries including Iraq, Somalia and Morocco, who serve as technical specialists linked to the wider Islamic State network.

Military sources said interrogation of the suspect is ongoing, adding that operational security considerations prevent the release of further details at this stage.

They noted that intelligence obtained from the suspect could assist ongoing counter-terrorism operations, identify additional terrorist cells and expose cross-border routes used by insurgent groups.
