Fresh crisis rocks APC in Kano as Barau, Ganduje factions clash over control

The internal dispute centres on the struggle for party leadership supremacy ahead of future elections.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) in Kano State has been plunged into a deeper crisis following a fresh clash between factions loyal to Deputy Senate President, Senator Barau Jibrin, and former Governor Abdullahi Ganduje, over control of the party’s leadership structure.

The latest dispute erupted in Kano Municipal Local Government Area after Mutari Ishaq, a prominent party figure reportedly aligned with the Ganduje camp, was said to have been removed by a group of APC stakeholders.

According to party sources, the decision was reached at a stakeholders’ meeting attended by representatives from the 13 wards in the local government area, alongside other party leaders, where Ishaq was unanimously expelled from the party.

The meeting, convened on Sunday, was initially intended to reconcile the warring factions and strengthen internal cohesion within the APC in Kano Municipal.

However, the effort collapsed when the two camps failed to agree on a common framework for dialogue, leading them to hold parallel meetings at separate venues — a development that further exposed the widening within the party.

The Ganduje-aligned faction reportedly held its meeting with party leaders including the APC Chairman of Kano Municipal, Alhaji Sani Abubakar Mai Fata Sharada, Muntari Ishaq Yakasai, Baffa Babba Dan’agundi, Engr. Sagir Koki, Hon. Salim Hashim Gwangwazo, Nura Hussain, Hon. Nabil Sarki Daneji, Hon. Ibrahim Kankarofi and Hon. Kabiru Labour.

On the other hand, supporters loyal to Senator Barau Jibrin were said to have convened a parallel meeting at Sultanate Suite, led by Hon. Salisu Maje Ahmed Gwangwazo, Malam Ibrahim Kankarofi, Hon. Fa’izu Alfindiki, Hon. Dan Bello, Alhaji Hamza Darma and Barrister Faruk Iya Sambo.

Sources further revealed that supporters of Kano State Governor, Abba Kabir Yusuf, were aligned with the Ganduje faction during deliberations, where strategies and resolutions concerning the future direction of the party were discussed.

Kano Municipal Local Government Area, one of the most populous in the state with a significant voter base, has increasingly emerged as a strategic political battleground as parties position themselves ahead of future electoral contests.
