Governor Alex Otti has approved automatic lecturing appointments and postgraduate scholarships for all first-class graduates of Abia State University, in a move aimed at rewarding academic excellence and strengthening the state’s education sector.

The announcement was made during the institution’s combined 30th to 32nd convocation ceremony, where the governor directed the university management to retain all qualified first-class graduates as graduate assistants, subject to the completion of the mandatory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC).

Otti further extended the opportunity to the best graduating students across departments, provided they attain a minimum cumulative grade point average of 4.25.

In addition, all first-class graduates across the three convocations will receive postgraduate scholarships to any public university of their choice within Nigeria, up to doctorate level, on the condition that they accept the teaching appointments.

The governor also directed the Head of Service to identify vacancies within the civil service to absorb up to 100 exceptional graduates after their NYSC, with priority given to candidates in critical sectors such as education, computer science, statistics, and health-related fields.

As part of broader youth empowerment efforts, Otti disclosed that ₦200 million has been set aside to support up to 100 graduates with innovative business ideas, particularly in agriculture, ICT, and clean energy. Interested applicants have been asked to submit their proposals on or before April 30, 2026.

At the ceremony, the governor personally rewarded the overall best graduating student, Oluchi Etumsi, with a cash gift of ₦5 million.

He also congratulated honorary award recipients, including Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, Allen Onyema, and Stella Okoli, urging them to continue upholding the values associated with their recognition.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to education, Otti stressed that sustained investment in human capital development remains critical to the long-term growth and prosperity of Abia State.
