Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State has granted state pardon to 12 convicted inmates in a move aimed at promoting compassion, reconciliation, and social reintegration.

The decision was made public in a statement issued by the State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Bello Abdulkadir Fanini.

According to the statement, the pardon aligns with the spirit of Ramadan and the forthcoming Eid al-Fitr celebrations, a period often associated with forgiveness and acts of mercy.

The gesture is expected to give the beneficiaries a fresh start while encouraging peaceful coexistence and reintegration into society.

According to the statement, the decision followed recommendations by the Jigawa State Advisory Council on the Prerogative of Mercy, in accordance with Section 5(1) of the Advisory Council of Prerogative of Mercy Law, Cap A2, Laws of Jigawa State 2012.

Fanini explained that the governor exercised his constitutional powers under Section 212(1) of the 1999 Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria (as amended) to approve the pardon.

He said the gesture was aimed at fostering goodwill and giving the beneficiaries an opportunity to reintegrate into society as responsible citizens.

The beneficiaries of the pardon include Ibrahim Adamu Isa, Sa’idu Umar, Adamu Musa, Habibu Musa, Yusuf Ahmed, Shu’aibu Adamu, Abdullahi Ya’u, Yahaya Jana’u, Abdul Hamisu, Garba Miko, Salisu Isa, and Aliyu Ibrahim.

The commissioner noted that the inmates were considered based on their good conduct while in custody and the fact that they had only a few months left to complete their sentences.

He urged the pardoned individuals to reciprocate the gesture by maintaining good behaviour and refraining from any actions that could lead to further legal infractions.
