A gunman was shot dead by United States Secret Service agents after opening fire near the White House on Saturday evening in Washington, D.C.

According to the Secret Service, the incident occurred shortly after 6 p.m. local time when the suspect allegedly pulled a weapon from a bag and began shooting near the White House security perimeter.

Secret Service officers immediately returned fire, fatally wounding the suspect, who was later pronounced dead at a hospital.

The agency confirmed that one bystander was also struck by gunfire during the exchange, although details about the victim’s condition were not immediately released.

President Donald Trump was inside the White House at the time of the incident but was not harmed.

Secret Service Communications Chief Anthony Guglielmi said no security personnel were injured during the confrontation.

Reacting to the incident, Trump praised the swift response of security agencies.

“Thank you to our great Secret Service and Law Enforcement for the swift and professional action taken this evening against a gunman near the White House,” the president said in a statement posted on Truth Social.

Several media outlets identified the suspect as Nasire Best, a 21-year-old from Maryland who reportedly had a history of mental health concerns and previous interactions with law enforcement.

The shooting triggered a major security response around the White House complex, with police and security agencies sealing off parts of downtown Washington.

Witnesses described hearing multiple gunshots before people began running from the area.

The incident comes amid heightened security concerns surrounding Trump, who has faced several alleged assassination attempts in recent years, including attacks during the 2024 presidential campaign and after his return to office.

Authorities have launched an investigation into the motive behind the shooting.
