Israeli PM files extraordinary pardon request amid bribery trial

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has formally asked President Isaac Herzog for a presidential pardon as his long-running corruption trial moves into a decisive phase.

Netanyahu, who is facing charges of bribery, fraud, and breach of trust, submitted the request through the legal department of the president’s office.

The embattled leader did not admit guilt in his one-page plea but argued that granting the pardon would serve the “public interest”.

The prime minister is being tried over multiple allegations, including claims that he received luxury gifts, such as cigars and champagne, from wealthy associates in exchange for political favours.

He is also accused of offering regulatory benefits to media executives in return for favourable coverage.

Indicted in 2019, Netanyahu became the first sitting Israeli prime minister to face criminal charges.

His trial, which began in 2020, was slowed by pandemic restrictions but has since resumed fully, with the court now moving to fast-track proceedings.

While his supporters continue to insist that the case is a politically motivated witch-hunt aimed at weakening his hold on power, critics argue that allowing the justice system to run its course is crucial to protecting Israel’s democratic institutions.

The Israeli president’s office described the request as “extraordinary”, noting that it carries “significant implications”.

It added that President Herzog would review the matter “with great care and responsibility”.

Netanyahu’s plea comes shortly after US President Donald Trump wrote to Herzog, publicly urging him to pardon the Israeli leader.
