Iyabo Obasanjo set to rejoin PDP amid Ogun guber ambition

Published

Iyabo Obasanjo, daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo and a governorship aspirant in Ogun State, is reportedly set to return to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) following her recent resignation from the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

A close associate of the former senator, who represented Ogun Central between 2007 and 2011, disclosed that she had already informed allies of her intention to rejoin the PDP, saying her political focus remains firmly on Ogun State and its future governance.

Her resignation from the APC, contained in a letter dated May 31 and addressed to the party’s state chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, cited alleged rejection, maltreatment, and lack of respect from the party leadership as reasons for her exit.

In the letter, she also faulted the consensus arrangement that produced Senator Solomon Adeola as the party’s governorship candidate for Ogun West, insisting that the process did not comply with the party’s guidelines and that she was not properly consulted.

Iyabo Obasanjo further alleged that her supporters were assaulted and denied access to the venue where Adeola was announced as consensus candidate, despite her earlier acceptance of the arrangement in good faith.

She noted that although she initially congratulated Adeola and pledged support after the announcement, follow-up engagements and assurances reportedly given to her supporters were not honoured, leading to her decision to leave the party.

The former senator, who is currently based in the United States, also recalled that she re-entered active politics late last year after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area.

Her potential return to the PDP marks another significant shift in Ogun State’s political landscape as parties intensify realignments ahead of the next election cycle.
