2027: ‘I support Tinubu’ – Iyabo Obasanjo states position after Very Nigerian story
Professor Iyabo Obasanjo, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) senatorial candidate for Ogun Central, has dismissed reports alleging that she is considering a political alliance with Peter Obi ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obasanjo described the reports as not teue, insisting that she had never met the former Anambra State governor for political discussions.
She also declared her support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu in the forthcoming presidential election.
The former senator said her preference for Tinubu was informed by her longstanding political relationship with the President, whom she described as the presidential candidate she knew best.
“I am supporting Tinubu because I know him best of all the presidential candidates as a much senior politician, and he has always treated me with respect,” she said.
She further dismissed claims that she was negotiating or considering any political arrangement involving Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
“I have never met Obi for any political discussions ever,” she stated.
The clarification followed our earlier publication, which sources revealed to us (Very Nigerian) that a proposed political arrangement described as a “Rainbow Coalition” was emerging in Ogun Central.
According to our sources, Obasanjo was considering endorsing Obi as part of a cross-party voting arrangement ahead of the 2027 elections.
However, Obasanjo’s campaign organisation rejected the claims, describing the publication as fabricated and alleging that it was intended to mislead voters and create confusion within the PDP.
In a statement signed by its spokesperson, Peter Macjob, the Iyabo Obasanjo Senatorial Campaign Organisation said there had been no meetings, consultations or agreements between Obasanjo and Obi concerning any proposed political alliance.
The organisation maintained that Obasanjo remained the duly cleared PDP senatorial candidate for Ogun Central and was focused on her ambition to return to the National Assembly.
It urged voters and media organisations to disregard the report, arguing that political discussions should focus on candidates’ records, programmes and capacity to deliver rather than unsubstantiated claims about secret arrangements.
The campaign organisation added that its priority remained mobilising support across Ogun Central and presenting Obasanjo’s candidacy as an opportunity to promote effective representation and grassroots development.
Obasanjo’s position also highlights the distinction between her senatorial ambition under the PDP and her stated preference in the presidential contest. While retaining her party’s ticket for Ogun Central, she has publicly declared support for Tinubu, distancing herself from the alleged arrangement involving Obi.
The campaign reiterated its call for issue-based politics, urging voters to assess candidates on their individual merits and their ability to address the needs of the electorate.
