Hon. Yekini Idaiyi, representing Akoko-Edo II Constituency, has emerged as the new Speaker of the Edo State House of Assembly.
Idaiyi’s emergence followed the resignation of Blessing Agbebaku as Speaker of the state legislature on Monday.
Following Agbebaku’s resignation, the Deputy Speaker, Jonathan Ibhamawu, presided over plenary, during which Idaiyi was nominated and subsequently sworn in as the new Speaker.
The development marks another major change in the leadership of the Edo Assembly and comes amid reports of internal moves against Agbebaku.
The circumstances surrounding Agbebaku’s resignation were not immediately clear as of the time of filing this report.
There were also reports that the former Speaker had been suspended by the Assembly, although details of the alleged suspension remained unclear.
Agbebaku emerged as Speaker of the 8th Edo State House of Assembly in June 2023 and led the legislature until his resignation on Monday.
Idaiyi will now assume leadership of the Assembly as lawmakers begin a new phase under his leadership.
