A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has reportedly died in a hotel room following an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified as Angela Defa Jacob.

Uwuigbe was said to have checked into the hotel with Jacob and reportedly died shortly after the encounter.

The incident allegedly occurred on October 5, 2026, at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, in Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State.

The circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death remain unclear, while details of what may have led to the incident have not been fully established.

A source said the lecturer asked Jacob to leave the room to purchase something for them.

However, when she returned, she reportedly found him lying lifeless on the bed.

The incident was reported to the police at about 8pm on Sunday.

Confirming the development, the spokesperson for the Edo State Police Command, Eno Ikoedem, said three people had been arrested in connection with the incident.

“On October 5, 2026, at about 8pm, the command received a report that Matthew Uwuigbe, a lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, had lodged at a hotel in Ekpoma and engaged the services of a 21-year-old sex worker, Angela Defa Jacob.

“He subsequently sent the woman to purchase water for him, and upon her return, she found him lying dead in the room,” Ikoedem said.

She identified the three people in custody as the hotel owner, the manager and Jacob, adding that investigation into the circumstances surrounding the lecturer’s death was ongoing.

The police spokesperson also said the deceased’s remains had been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary.

Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of the institution’s staff but stressed that the incident occurred outside the university premises.

“We are not denying that he is our staff, but whatever he did and what happened, it is his private life.

“The girl in question is not our student, and everything happened outside our institution,” he said.
