JUST IN: Lagos NURTW Organising Secretary Toba Ajiboye is dead

Comrade Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW), Lagos State Council, has died.

His death was confirmed by the Chairman of the NURTW Lagos State Council, Mustapha Adekunle, popularly known as Sego.

In a tribute, Sego described Ajiboye as a trusted friend, loyal ally, and committed union leader. He said the late organising secretary was a dependable pillar of Team Sego, whose dedication and unwavering support would be greatly missed.

Very Nigerian learnt Toba reportedly escaped an assassination attempt Sunday night, July 12, after suspected gunmen allegedly opened fire on his vehicle while he was returning home from his Fadeyi childhood area of Lagos. Newspapers

The attackers riddled Toba’s white vehicle with bullets, leaving multiple holes in the windscreen and different parts of the car’s body.

A video widely shared online shows the vehicle bearing several bullet impacts, fueling concerns among supporters and residents over the alleged attack.

Sources familiar with the incident said Toba and other occupants of the vehicle sustained bullet wounds and survived the attack, although the circumstances surrounding the shooting remain unclear.

It was gathered that he was on his way out to Ikorodu Road Express when the attackers blocked his car and opened fire on the vehicle.

Meanwhile, Very Nigerian learnt that there is palpable tension in the Fadeyi area and its neighbouring environs due to fear of reprisal attacks.

Security operatives, including the Response Rapid Squad (RRS), have been deployed to these flashpoints to maintain peace.

Adekunle on his verified Facebook page said: “The news of the sudden passing of Comrade Toba Ajiboye has left me deeply saddened and heartbroken. It is difficult to come to terms with the loss of such a loyal, dependable, and committed ally.

“Comrade Toba Ajiboye, the Organising Secretary of the NURTW Lagos State Council, was more than an ally; he was a trusted friend, a man of steadfast loyalty and unwavering commitment, and a true pillar of TeamSego and SegoNation.

“His friendship, unwavering support, and selfless dedication to the union over the years will forever remain etched in my heart.

“My heartfelt condolences go to his family, friends, and the entire NURTW family. May Almighty God forgive his shortcomings, grant him eternal rest, and give us all the strength and fortitude to bear this painful and irreparable loss.

“Farewell, my dear friend. Your loyalty, friendship, and unwavering support will forever remain in my heart. You will be deeply missed, and I will never forget the bond we shared. Rest well, Toba. Until we meet again.”
