Kano mass wedding: ‘Public funds can be used to support marriages under Shariah law’ – Gumi

Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ahmad Gumi, has defended the use of public funds to support marriage arrangements in states operating under Shariah law.

Gumi stated this in a Facebook post on Thursday, arguing that providing such assistance is part of the government’s responsibility in a society governed by Islamic principles.

According to him, governments in Shariah-governed states are expected to address social challenges created by the prohibition of sexual relationships outside marriage.

He argued that where prostitution, fornication, adultery and promiscuity are prohibited by both religious teachings and state laws, government support for people who cannot afford to marry should be regarded as responsible governance.

Gumi maintained that helping financially disadvantaged individuals get married could help governments address social issues associated with restrictions on relationships outside marriage.

He said public resources could legitimately be used to support young people in urgent need of marriage, as well as women who face limited opportunities to find suitable spouses.

“In a Shariah law-driven state, where prostitution, fornication, adultery, and promiscuity are prohibited by both divine and state laws, using public funds to facilitate the marriage of women who are in excess of the available pool of eligible men, or of any young person in dire need of marriage, is a legitimate and responsible component of good governance,” he said.
