Lecturers resume work as ASUU ends 52-day MOAUM strike

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at Moses Orshio Adasu University, Makurdi (MOAUM), has called off its 52-day strike after reaching an agreement with the Benue State Government and the university management.

The industrial action, which began on June 1, 2026, was triggered by unresolved issues, including the non-payment of outstanding entitlements, promotion arrears and other staff welfare concerns.

Announcing the development on Wednesday, the Chairman of ASUU-MOAUM, Dr. Ako Sule, said the union’s National Executive Council (NEC) approved the suspension of the strike following the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) by the union, the state government and the university authorities.

According to Sule, the agreement reflects commitments made by all parties to address the lecturers’ grievances, paving the way for academic activities to resume at the institution.

Sule said the suspension took immediate effect, adding that the MoU demonstrated the commitment of the union, the state government and the university administration to resolving the issues that led to the industrial action through dialogue and mutual understanding.

“The decision to suspend the industrial action became necessary following the successful signing of a Memorandum of Understanding arising from a tripartite agreement involving the Union, the Benue State Government and the University Administration,” he stated.

He said having shown good faith and made sacrifices in the interest of the university community, ASUU expected the government and the institution’s management to implement all provisions of the agreement.

“The Union expects the government and the University Administration to faithfully implement the terms of the MoU and respect the principles and rules of collective bargaining. Sustained industrial harmony can only be achieved when agreements freely entered into are honoured promptly and in good faith,” Sule added.

The ASUU chairman directed all academic staff of the university to resume duties immediately and continue their responsibilities diligently.

He appreciated members of the union, students, parents and the public for their patience and support during the period of the strike, assuring that ASUU remained committed to protecting the welfare of its members while promoting the development of the university through constructive engagement.
