The Anambra State Sector Command of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has arrested 121 motorists for committing a total of 214 traffic offences during its ongoing “Operation Total Compliance” across the state.

The Sector Commander, Bridget Asekhauno, disclosed this on Wednesday while monitoring the enforcement exercise in Awka.

Represented by the Officer-in-Charge of Motor Vehicle Administration, DCC Gloria Ezeugwu, Asekhauno explained that the special enforcement exercise is part of a three-day nationwide operation being conducted simultaneously across the FRSC’s 12 zonal commands.

She explained that the exercise aims to educate motorists on road safety regulations, enforce compliance and curb traffic violations that often result in road crashes.

She pointed out that road safety remained a collective responsibility, adding that motorists and the FRSC must work together to make Nigerian roads safer.

She said, “About 121 motorists were arrested for committing 214 traffic offences during the ‘Operation total compliance’ exercise conducted across the state.

“Officers recorded offences including overloading, failure to install or use speed limiting devices, driving without valid licences, attempted bribery of FRSC personnel, dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

“The command arrested 27 motorists for overloading, 34 for violating speed limiting device regulations and 10 for driving without valid driver’s licences.

“It also apprehended four motorists for attempting to bribe FRSC officials, while two motorists each were arrested for dangerous driving and driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, among others.”

She said the operation specifically targets unsafe driving practices such as overloading and mixed loading.

She cautioned drivers against carrying passengers together with animals or goods, adding that it is dangerous and can have disastrous consequences, adding, “Goods should not be transported alongside human beings.

According to her, the command is also targeting drivers operating without speed limiting devices, pointing out that some even deactivate the devices after installation to enable them exceed the prescribed speed limits.

Asekhauno urged motorists to obey traffic regulations and use the ongoing enforcement exercise to cultivate safer driving habits ahead of the ember months
