Meet Peter Akpe, new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State
Dr. Peter Pereotubo Akpe has been confirmed as the new Deputy Governor of Bayelsa State, following the passing of former Deputy Governor Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo in December 2025.
Akpe, a seasoned educator, lawmaker, and political strategist, currently serves as Chief of Staff to Governor Douye Diri, a role in which he has overseen policy implementation, inter-ministerial coordination, and strategic planning.
Background
Born in Sagbama Local Government Area, Akpe showed an early passion for learning.
He earned a degree in Education from Rivers State College of Education and went on to Rivers State University for a Master’s and PhD in Educational Management and Planning.
These qualifications laid the foundation for his career in public service.
Career path
Akpe began his professional life as a lecturer at Niger Delta University, contributing to educational policy, research, and institutional growth.
He later transitioned into politics, serving as a legislative aide and political adviser before winning a seat in the Bayelsa State House of Assembly for Sagbama Constituency 2.
Rising to the position of Majority Leader, he sponsored bills on youth empowerment, education, and rural development, and played a key role in coordinating the legislative agenda of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
After leaving the Assembly, Akpe was appointed Deputy Chief of Staff and later Chief of Staff at Government House, Yenagoa, where he earned a reputation for calm, methodical leadership.
Personal life
Beyond politics, he is an ordained clergyman with the Redeem Christian Church of God, reflecting his commitment to service and ethical leadership.
