Nigerian Army Commander escapes Ambush as troops neutralize five terrorists in Kebbi
Major General Bemgha Koughna, Commander Sector 2 of the Joint Task Force North West Operation Fansan Yamma and General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division of the Nigerian Army, narrowly escaped an ambush by suspected Lakurawa Terrorist Group (LTG) fighters near Mayama Hill, Kebbi State.
The ambush occurred while the convoy was en route to visit frontline troops in the region. According to Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, spokesperson for Sector 2, the terrorists opened fire from forested terrain, but Major General Koughna demonstrated decisive leadership, coordinating a swift counterattack that neutralised five insurgents and safeguarded the troops.
The army subsequently conducted a thorough sweep of the area, recovering weapons and valuable intelligence materials. Seized items included an OJC gun, a PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles with four magazines, PKT ammunition, rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, five motorcycles, two mobile phones, a camel bag containing N840,000, and other items.
Lt. Col. Osoba noted that the operation disrupted the terrorists’ plans and sent a strong deterrent signal to armed groups operating in the North-West, reaffirming the commitment of the 8 Division to protecting civilians and combating insurgency in the region.
