Nigerian star coach Rena Wakama named Head Coach of Hive Basketball Club
Rena Wakama, the head coach of Nigeria’s national women’s basketball team, D’Tigress, has been appointed as the head coach of Hive Basketball Club (Hive BC) in the Unrivaled Basketball League in the United States.
The announcement was made on Thursday in a statement released by the Unrivaled League, a women’s three-on-three basketball competition established in 2023 as an alternative league to the WNBA, designed to run during its off-season.
Hive BC will be making its debut in the competition when the new season begins in 2026, and Wakama will lead the team in its first campaign.
Earlier in March, the 33-year-old Nigerian coach joined the Chicago Sky of the WNBA as an assistant coach.
Wakama made history in 2023 as the first female head coach of D’Tigress and became the first woman to win the FIBA Afrobasket Women’s Championship in the same year.
She went on to guide Nigeria to a record fifth consecutive Afrobasket title in August 2024.
Her achievements also extended to the global stage, as she was named the best coach in the basketball event at the Paris 2024 Olympics after leading D’Tigress to become the first-ever African basketball team, male or female, to reach the Olympic quarterfinals.
It is common practice in basketball for coaches to handle both national teams and club sides simultaneously.
