Obi/Kwankwaso ticket won’t threaten Tinubu’s re-election in 2027 – Igbo group

A coalition of pro-Tinubu Igbo groups, Ndigbo For Tinubu 2027 (NDI-ABAT), has dismissed fears that a joint presidential ticket between former governors Peter Obi and Musa Rabiu Kwankwaso poses a threat to President Bola Tinubu’s re-election bid in 2027.

In a statement issued Thursday, the group’s National Coordinator, Mazi Okechukwu Isiguzoro, and Secretary-General, Dr. Ugwuoke Ugwuoke, said intelligence reports suggest Obi and Kwankwaso are planning a joint ticket under an opposition party, not the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

The report claimed former President Olusegun Obasanjo is involved in facilitating the alliance, and Kwankwaso has agreed to serve as Obi’s running mate.

NDI-ABAT described Obi’s recent Eid-el-Fitr visit to Kano, where he met Kwankwaso, as a deliberate political signal of alignment.

However, the forum argued the ticket could face internal hurdles, citing the influence of Kano Governor Abba Yusuf and Abia Governor Alex Otti, who reportedly support Tinubu, and the stance of former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, who is unlikely to step down.

The group also noted ongoing ADC registration may favor Atiku in securing the party’s presidential ticket.

Despite this, NDI-ABAT said it is mobilising Igbo support nationwide for Tinubu, aiming to deliver 13 million votes from the Southeast region.

“We are confident that Tinubu will defeat both the Obi/Kwankwaso ticket and a possible Atiku/Amaechi ticket in the 2027 presidential election,” the forum stated.
