Olatunji Disu assumes office as acting Inspector-General of Police

Disu took over leadership of the Nigeria Police Force following the resignation of former IGP Kayode Egbetokun.

The Acting Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has formally assumed duty as the 23rd indigenous Inspector-General of Police, taking over from Kayode Egbetokun, who served as the 22nd indigenous IGP from June 19, 2023 to February 24, 2026.

Disu, who was born on April 13, 1966, hails from Lagos Island Local Government Area of Lagos State. He assumed office following the resignation of Egbetokun and brings decades of operational, investigative, intelligence, and administrative experience to the leadership of the Nigeria Police Force.

The new acting police chief holds several academic qualifications, including a Master’s degree in Entrepreneurship from the National Open University of Nigeria (2023), a Master’s degree in Criminology, Security and Legal Psychology from Lagos State University (2022), and a Master’s degree in Public Administration from Adekunle Ajasin University (2010). He also earned a Postgraduate Diploma in International Relations and Strategic Studies and a Bachelor’s degree in English Education from Lagos State University.

Disu joined the Nigeria Police Force as a Cadet Assistant Superintendent of Police on May 18, 1992. Before his appointment, he served as Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department (FCID) Annex, Alagbon, Lagos.

During his career, he held several strategic positions, including Commissioner of Police in the Federal Capital Territory and Rivers State, Deputy Commissioner of Police in charge of the Intelligence Response Team, and Commander of the Rapid Response Squad in Lagos between 2015 and 2021. He also served as Aide-de-Camp to a former governor of Lagos State and participated in international peacekeeping operations, including leading the first Nigerian Police contingent to the African Union Mission in Sudan in 2005.

Disu is a member of several professional bodies, including the International Academy of Forensics, the National Association of Investigative Specialists in the United States, the Nigerian Institute of Public Relations, the Chartered Institute of Personnel Management, and the International Association of Chiefs of Police.

Beyond policing, he is a decorated martial artist and former National Chairman of the Nigeria Police Judo Association, holding a third-degree black belt and winning a silver medal at the 2022 U.S. Open Judo Championships.

The Nigeria Police Force expressed appreciation to former IGP Egbetokun for his contributions to the modernisation and strengthening of the Force.

Disu has pledged to consolidate ongoing reforms, strengthen community policing, and enhance internal security, while assuring officers and the public of his commitment to professionalism and improved service delivery.
