Olumide Akpata, the Labour Party (LP) candidate in the 2024 Edo State governorship election, has defected to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).

Akpata, a former President of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), formally joined the ADC on Tuesday at a ceremony held at the party’s secretariat in Benin City, the Edo State capital.

The ADC State Chairman, Kennedy Odion, presented him with the party’s membership card in the presence of several prominent state and national leaders.

Among those in attendance were Peter Obi, former Anambra State governor and presidential aspirant, and John Odigie-Oyegun, former National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and former governor of Edo State. Also present was another former Edo governor, Oserheimen Osunbor, among other party stakeholders.

Speaking at the event, Akpata expressed appreciation for the warm reception and thanked the ADC leadership for what he described as its commitment to building a new Nigeria. He also commended members of the Obidient Movement for their steadfast support.

He explained that his decision to join the ADC was driven by his desire to contribute meaningfully to the party’s growth, particularly following Peter Obi’s move to the party on December 31, 2025.

In his remarks, Obi reiterated his commitment to the vision of a new Nigeria.

“Our commitment to a new Nigeria is total, though they are doing everything possible to stop us,” Obi said.

“We must build a nation that works for all, not just a few. This country is currently working for a few; it shouldn’t be so. We are all Nigerians. As a matter of fact, we must move this country from the status of consumption to production.”

John Odigie-Oyegun also addressed the gathering, saying the ADC’s influence was expanding both in numbers and quality of membership.

“Our stocks are growing every day, not just in number but in quality. Nigeria is a nation that needs to be saved,” he stated.
