BREAKING: Adamawa Speaker, 14 Lawmakers dump PDP amid Fintiri’s planned defection to APC
The mass resignation is seen as a strategic move ahead of Governor Fintiri’s anticipated switch from PDP to APC before the 2027 elections.
Fresh political tension has emerged in Adamawa State following the resignation of the Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Wesley Bathiya, and 14 other lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party, a development that has intensified speculation over a possible defection by Governor Ahmadu Umaru Fintiri.
The mass resignation is widely seen as part of an unfolding political realignment ahead of the 2027 general elections, with indications that the governor may be preparing to join the All Progressives Congress.
Political insiders say the coordinated exit of the Speaker and the lawmakers suggests a strategic effort to reposition political structures in the state in anticipation of the governor’s expected defection.
Reports indicate that the APC recently suspended its planned state congresses in Adamawa to accommodate Governor Fintiri and his political allies — a move interpreted by observers as a step to ease his entry into the ruling party and minimise internal opposition.
The decision reportedly generated unease among some party members, who questioned whether internal democratic processes were being compromised to facilitate the anticipated defection.
With the Speaker and a majority bloc in the 25-member Assembly now out of the PDP, the balance of power in the legislature appears to have shifted significantly, leaving the House effectively under APC influence.
Only the member representing Lamurde Constituency, Build Bauna, has yet to clearly indicate his political position, as he was neither publicly associated with the resignations nor visibly present during the plenary where the announcements were made.
Political analysts say the development points to a near-total collapse of PDP structures within the State Assembly and strengthens indications that the governor’s planned defection may be imminent.
Efforts to obtain official confirmation from the governor’s camp were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report, although sources within both political camps described the unfolding events as part of a carefully coordinated political realignment that could reshape the state’s political landscape.
