Oyo Abductions: We are silent because our children are not in Nigeria — Lawmaker Salami knocks Nigerian government

Hon. Bamidele Salam has criticised political leaders over what he described as a lack of urgency in addressing the worsening insecurity in Nigeria’s schools, saying many decision-makers are insulated from the reality faced by ordinary citizens.

The lawmaker argued that the slow response to repeated school attacks is partly because most leaders have their own children enrolled in private institutions or studying abroad, far removed from the risks confronting public school pupils.

He maintained that if the government is capable of providing security for private residences and high-profile institutions, it should equally be able to guarantee the safety of schools where the children of ordinary Nigerians learn.

Salam stressed that the burden of insecurity disproportionately affects children from low-income families and public servants, who have no alternative but to rely on public education systems that are increasingly vulnerable to attacks.

He therefore called on the Federal Government to establish a dedicated security outfit focused specifically on protecting schools nationwide, warning that continued attacks on educational institutions could further erode public confidence in the system.

According to him, securing schools should no longer be treated as a secondary concern but as a national emergency requiring specialised intervention.
