Gov Eno sacks aide for calling on Tinubu to resign

A media aide in the office of the Political Adviser to Akwa Ibom State Governor, Umo Eno, has been dismissed following a Facebook post in which he suggested that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ought to have resigned over the country’s current challenges.

The aide, identified as Osborne Okon, was relieved of his appointment on Tuesday through a letter signed by the Political Adviser to the Governor, Godwin Ntuk Udeh.

In the dismissal letter, the office accused Okon of “actions bordering on disloyalty,” adding that the decision was necessary to maintain discipline and “keep the office purified.”

The letter stated that his appointment was terminated with immediate effect, citing concerns over conduct deemed incompatible with his role.

The controversy began after Okon made a post on Facebook questioning the President’s leadership, writing that in a “sane clime,” President Tinubu would have “respectfully and honourably resigned,” while noting that his opinion was made despite being a member of the APC.

Following the post, the aide was reportedly removed from office, a development that quickly circulated on social media.

Reacting to the dismissal, Okon said he was not formally informed before the decision went public, describing the manner of his removal as embarrassing and humiliating. He said he only learned of the sack after receiving calls from associates who had seen the letter online.

He also claimed that his engagement with the office was based on a verbal arrangement rather than a formal appointment, and that he had continued working despite a modest monthly stipend.

Okon insisted he bore no resentment, maintaining that he remained loyal to the APC and would continue supporting Governor Umo Eno’s administration despite his exit.

The incident has since sparked conversations around political loyalty, free expression among political aides, and the boundaries of public commentary in government-linked appointments.
