Many feared killed as building collapses near Gudu Market in Abuja
No fewer than five persons have been confirmed dead after a building collapsed in the Durumi 3 area of Abuja, close to the popular Gudu Market.
The tragic incident happened around 9:00 a.m. on Saturday, causing panic in the area as rescue workers and residents struggled to save victims trapped beneath the rubble.
The Mandate Secretary for Health and Human Services in the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Dr. Adedolapo Fasawe, confirmed the incident while speaking on behalf of agencies involved in the rescue operation.
According to her, a total of 15 persons were pulled out from the rubble during the rescue exercise.
She disclosed that nine victims were rescued alive, while five persons lost their lives. One other victim was said to be in critical condition.
Dr. Fasawe revealed that preliminary findings by the Standards Organisation of Nigeria, SON, indicated that the developer may have compromised the quality of the cement mixture used for the construction of the building.
She urged residents and property developers in the nation’s capital to always obtain the required approvals from the FCT Development Control Department before embarking on any building project.
Meanwhile, rescue operations and investigations into the cause of the collapse are ongoing.
