Panic in Ogun as gunmen kill Soldier, kidnap residents

Gunmen have reportedly killed a soldier during an attack on a private dredging site in Magbon Etido community, Mowe area of Ogun State.

Very Nigerian reports that the attackers had earlier abducted several residents of Karanla community before encountering military personnel deployed to the area.

Sources cited by the newspaper said the assailants stormed the dredging site in an apparent attempt to kidnap an expatriate worker. However, the target reportedly escaped, forcing the gunmen to flee the scene.

Oluseyi Babaseyi, public relations officer of the Ogun state police command, in a statement on Monday, described the attack as an “isolated criminal attack” and not a bandit operation.

“Regrettably, a soldier on security duty lost his life during the incident, while another sustained injuries and is currently receiving treatment,” the report reads.

“Following the report, Police operatives, in collaboration with the Military, swiftly mobilized to the area and commenced coordinated operations to apprehend those responsible.

“Preliminary findings do not indicate any connection between the incident and banditry activities. Investigations and tactical operations remain ongoing.”

The command assured residents that “the situation is under control”, security presence has been reinforced, and there is no cause for alarm.
