The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained popular social media influencer, Habeeb Hamzat, widely known as Peller, following a viral video that showed him driving recklessly and crashing his vehicle during a live-stream.

The arrest was confirmed in a statement issued on Tuesday by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Abimbola Adebisi, and made available to Very Nigerian.

According to the police, the incident occurred on Sunday, December 14, 2025, and sparked widespread public outrage after the footage circulated on social media platforms.

The Command said the influencer’s conduct posed a grave danger to public safety and necessitated immediate intervention by law enforcement.

“The Lagos State Police Command has arrested and detained, for further investigation, Habeeb Hamzat, popularly known as ‘Peller’, following a viral video that surfaced online on Sunday, December 14, 2025, in which he was seen driving recklessly, leading to a dangerous road crash while the incident was being live-streamed, thereby endangering his life and that of other road users,” the statement read in part.

The police described the act as extremely dangerous, noting that it could have resulted in fatal consequences for the suspect and unsuspecting members of the public.

“His action constitutes a deliberate attempt to endanger his life and the lives of other innocent road users,” the Command added.

The police further disclosed that the case has been transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) for a thorough investigation.

“The matter is currently under investigation by the SCID. Upon conclusion of the investigation, the suspect will be charged to a court of competent jurisdiction in accordance with the law,” the statement said.

Reacting to the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Olohundare Jimoh, issued a stern warning to social media influencers, content creators and members of the public against using online platforms to promote reckless, dangerous or unlawful acts.

“The Commissioner of Police strongly warns influencers and content creators to desist from engaging in or promoting reckless and criminal behaviour on social media,” the statement noted.

He stressed that such actions would no longer be tolerated, adding that the Command would enforce the law without fear or favour.

The incident has reignited public debate over the growing trend of risky stunts by content creators seeking online attention, with many Nigerians calling for stricter enforcement to curb dangerous behaviour on the roads.

Authorities have repeatedly warned that speeding, distracted driving and disregard for traffic regulations remain major contributors to road accidents in Lagos, insisting that offenders will be prosecuted regardless of their social status or online influence.
