Police intensifies probe, arrest Anthony Joshua’s driver

The Ogun State Police Command has arrested the driver of the Lexus SUV involved in the fatal road accident that claimed the lives of two close associates of former heavyweight boxing champion, Anthony Joshua, on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

The arrest was confirmed on Thursday by the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO) of the command, DSP Oluseyi Babaseyi, following mounting public interest in the circumstances surrounding the crash.

According to police sources, the driver is currently in custody as investigations into the accident continue.

“The driver of the Lexus SUV is currently in custody in connection with the Anthony Joshua accident case. Investigations are ongoing,” Babaseyi stated in a terse message shared on his verified X (formerly Twitter) account.

The accident occurred on Monday when the Lexus SUV conveying Joshua and members of his team rammed into a stationary truck along the busy Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

Two of Joshua’s associates — Kevin Latif Ayodele, his personal trainer, and Sina Ghami, his strength and conditioning coach — lost their lives in the crash.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) disclosed that five adult males were involved in the accident, with two fatalities recorded, one person injured, and two others escaping unhurt.

Preliminary findings by the FRSC attributed the crash to excessive speed and wrongful overtaking, which the agency identified as among the leading causes of fatal road accidents on Nigerian highways.

Joshua, who sustained minor injuries, was rushed to Lagoon Hospital, Ikoyi, Lagos, where he received medical attention. He was later discharged late Wednesday night after doctors certified him clinically fit to continue his recovery from home.

The tragic incident has sparked renewed public concern over road safety on the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway, one of Nigeria’s busiest and most accident-prone highways.

Police authorities say further updates will be provided as investigations progress.
