Police nab couple operating drug trafficking ring in Imo
The Imo State Police Command has arrested a couple, Mr Collins and Mrs Onyinyechi Iwunze, over alleged involvement in hard drug trafficking in Umunjoku Obiokwu Amakohia-Ubi, located in Owerri West Local Government Area.
The Command’s spokesperson, DSP Henry Okoye, confirmed the arrest on Friday, stating that the operation was part of ongoing efforts to rid the state of criminal elements and strengthen public safety.
According to him, operatives from the Command’s surveillance unit acted on credible intelligence before storming the suspects’ residence, where the couple was apprehended.
Okoye said Collins, aged 51 years, and his wife, Onyinyechi, currently 43 years, allegedly dealt in hard drugs in commercial quantities.
He said a bag containing assorted illicit substances was recovered during the operation, adding that the couple are currently in custody while investigations continue.
Okoye said “operatives of the Imo State Police Command’s Surveillance Unit, acting on credible intelligence, arrested two suspects involved in the sale of prohibited hard drugs. The operation was carried out on 27th March 2026 at about 0630hrs at Umunjoku Obiokwu Amakohia-Ubi in Owerri West LGA.
”The suspects, Collins Iwunze (51) and his wife, Onyinyechi Iwunze (43), were apprehended at their residence, where they allegedly dealt in hard drugs in commercial quantities. A bag containing assorted illicit substances was recovered during the operation.
”The suspects are currently in custody, while investigations are ongoing to facilitate their prosecution”, he said.
Already, the state police boss, Audu Bosso, has commended the operatives and reiterated the command’s commitment to combat drug-related crimes.
He appealed to the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest police station or via 0803 477 3600.
