Pope Leo XIV condemns deadly attacks on Kwara communities, prays for victims

Pope Leo XIV, head of the Roman Catholic Church, has expressed deep concern over the recent spate of violent attacks on communities in Nigeria, particularly the deadly assault in Kaiama Local Government Area of Kwara State.

At least 100 persons were reportedly killed when gunmen attacked Woro and neighbouring communities on Tuesday, sparking widespread outrage across the country. Local authorities confirmed that 75 victims were buried on Wednesday, while 13 others were laid to rest on Thursday, as residents continue to search for those still missing.

The incident has drawn condemnation from both local and international actors amid growing concerns over insecurity in rural communities.

Reacting to the tragedy, Pope Leo XIV, in a statement posted on his official X (formerly Twitter) account on Sunday, said he received the news with sorrow and anguish.

> “It is with sorrow and concern that I learned of the recent attacks against various communities in Nigeria leading to a heavy loss of life. I express my prayerful closeness to all the victims of violence and terrorism,” the pontiff wrote.

He called on Nigerian authorities to intensify efforts to safeguard lives and restore security across the country.

> “I likewise hope that the competent authorities will continue to work with determination to ensure the safety and protection of the life of every citizen,” he added, using the hashtag #PrayTogether.

The Pope’s remarks came shortly after the United Nations Secretary-General, António Guterres, also condemned the killings, expressing solidarity with Nigeria and reaffirming the UN’s support for the government’s efforts to combat terrorism and violent extremism.

The attacks have renewed calls for urgent security intervention in vulnerable communities across the country.
