Rivers 2027: APC clears all Assembly aspirants loyal to Fubara
The All Progressives Congress (APC) screening committee in Rivers State has reportedly cleared 32 House of Assembly aspirants believed to be loyal to Governor Siminalayi Fubara ahead of the party’s 2027 legislative primaries.
The screening exercise, which took place on Saturday at the APC state secretariat along Aba Expressway in Port Harcourt, was conducted under heavy police presence amid rising political tension between camps loyal to Fubara and the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.
Ahead of the exercise, social media reports had alleged plans by Wike’s camp to use security operatives to intimidate aspirants aligned with Fubara. However, the Assistant Commissioner of Police supervising the deployment insisted officers were present strictly to maintain law and order.
Among those reportedly cleared are former Obio/Akpor council chairman, Chijioke Ihunwo, and current Bonny State Constituency lawmaker, Victor Oko Jumbo.
Also screened were aspirants believed to be loyal to Wike, including some of the 27 lawmakers who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the APC.
Political observers say the development has set the stage for an intense showdown between the Fubara and Wike factions during the APC primaries in Rivers State.
The exercise comes amid broader political realignments in the state, with prominent Wike allies such as Kingsley Chinda, Dax Alabo George and Tonye Cole also participating in the APC governorship screening process.
